Eat, Drink And Be Merry

W
ith Spring in the air, everybody is out and trying to have some fun outdoors. But this year Tokyo has been really hot and Spring very short so to say. Maybe climate warming has taken it`s toll on this pretty country as well.Having spent my life in Mumbai and Tokyo, I have seen similarities and differences in lifestyle, attitudes and approach to different aspects of life. I have also witnessed the differences between working to live and living to work.

Tokyo is the money making metropolis, where every person you meet says that he is either very busy or busy. Yet from Friday night onwards you see families filling up all the sushi, sashimi and other western cuisine restaurants to catch up on the week`s events with adults splurging on beers and the children fattening up on calorie filled deserts of Ice Creams and Cakes. For most of the Ethnic families, food is the glue that keeps relatives near and far together. In my family where we are all away from each other most of the time, the best and favorite dishes are prepared only when we are all together in Mumbai. And when we are together it is a never ending feast so to say. As always is the case we usually prepare a way too much. It has become a ritual of sorts and yet at the base of this ritual is food.

Unfortunately, these moments are few and far between. We get caught up in the daily routine running about our tasks and if you are in Tokyo running around in search of the most sought after commodity the Japanese Yen. This is the main problem, many of us solve with fast foods viz. Hamburgers or a quick Sandwich. Finally food becomes a necessity and not an enjoyable ritual. However, in the case of certain lucky few people, the lifestyle is centered around the idea of working to live and you`ll find that meals are treated as the all-in-all of life. Every meal is a reason to enjoy. It is like in France or the Napa Valley where even a glass of Wine has to be savored slowly as time ticks away.

Food and a great drink combine to mix up art and tradition leading up to eternal bliss as they say. I have a few friends from Philippines here who are always having some great dinners and parties consisting of really great food and new recipes. I am always looking forward to dinners with them. The food is good, the entertainment is great. There is no talk of work or the normal stresses of earning money etc. This is what I call "Working to Live".

The recipe for food and entertaining need not be expensive or complicated. It consists of the following

One teaspoon of Will to Enjoy......
Two Tablespoons of love ......
And a Handful of people to Share your good moments ........

Isn`t this the kind of happiness worth pursuing.
