Experiences in Unchartered Waters

I
t took one full day. Not at all long to say that I mastered it but long enough to say that I have sailed in the seas. This may surprise a lot of you but in my so many years in Japan, I never had a chance to hop onto a dinghy and sail in an yacht. I did have some lessons in sailing when I was doing my engineering but that was in a lake, which is nothing compared to being in a dinghy out in the sea.
I also have had some experiences sailing on cruise and mechanized sail boats but that too is a different experience. In dinghy sailing you are very near the waters. You can feel the water as it splashes on you when your dinghy catches speed. You can guide the dinghy`s direction by adjusting your body weight on its edges at different parts, just the way you would ride a 2 wheeler. And when the
Wind dies down, you can enjoy the sounds of the high seas without the disturbance of the engines as in an engine powered boat.

In the last couple of months, I have had some amazing experiences that I hope to tell my grandkids when I am 85. I would like to tell them what their grandpa was up to when he was young or not so young.

2008062302.jpgA couple of weeks back I did a trek up Mount Takao. This was also a good experience wherein I did some nature exploration in the hills around Tokyo and did shoot a few good photographs. During this trip, I also had a chance encounter with a group of fitness freaks who were at the peak of mount Takao and had jogged their way right up to the top and were planning to jog down back again. A cup of hot Japanese tea shared with this group still brings up nice memories.

Imagine riding along the sea for 8 hours. Well this is what I did last month at Tateyama a small town along the sea. This was done with a point to assess myself to see if I could still endure the hurdles required to take up adventures.

This are just a few of the experiences which I have been fortunate enough to enjoy during my life in Japan. Going through my list I can check off my first ride on a roller - coaster, my first bite of sashimi, my first sip of Japanese sake, my first visit to Onsen so on and on.
